Fixtures and Appliances
It is quite remarkable to note the differences in
water use between and among different appliances. It is also remarkable
how a relatively easy and inexpensive amount of maintenance can have a
dramatic impact on water use. The County offers these links or

Irrigation
Generally, about 50% or more of our residential water
use is out of doors. Though not common, we occasionally see people or
businesses irrigating sidewalks, driveways and roads or parking lots
along with their landscapes. Sometimes irrigation systems are operated
during high wind, or more wastefully, when it is actually raining.
Watering during the hottest part of the day increases evaporation and
wastes water. A relatively easy and inexpensive change to irrigation
practices or devices could save an enormous amount of ground water. For
a personalized analysis of your irrigation practices, please call on
Water Wise at 458-8278 Ext 2141. Water Wise is a service of the
Extension Service of the University of Arizona, in part funded by
Cochise County.

Artificial
Turf
While natural turf certainly has its
place, artificial turf is often a viable alternative, particularly where
turf applications are decorative, or cover large expanses. Artificial
turf eases the labor burden, the expense and time involved in weed and
pest control and grooming as well as the costs of equipment associated
with traditional turf. Most importantly, it not only eliminates the need
for irrigation with ground water, but acts as a permeable mulch as it
allows rain water to pass trough and infiltrate into the ground. the

Greywater, Reuse,
and Rainwater Harvesting
More than 90% of the limited
amount of rain we receive in this arid sub-watershed each year simply
runs off and evaporates. Gathering our normal annual rainfall (about 14
inches) on a 2000 square foot roof could, if used or put into the
ground, replace the pumping of about 18,000 gallons of ground water. How
many months of water use reflected on your water bill would that cover?
Grey water use is now legal in Arizona as long as you keep it on your
property and avoid using it to water vegetables. Grey water in Arizona
is limited to laundry water and bathroom sink and tub or shower water.
Kitchen sink, dishwasher and toilet water are not considered grey water.
Using grey water on your landscape can save ground water.

Water Meter
Want to know if something is leaking in your house? If
you are supplied by a water company, just turn off everything in the
building that uses water. Don't forget the swamp cooler. Then look at
you meter twice in 30 minutes. If it has moved - you have a leak
somewhere. One of the first places to look is at the flappers on your
toilets.
